How to Avoid Unexpected Expenses in Ramadan Umrah Packages 2027

Perform ‘Umrah when Ramadan comes, for ‘Umrah in it is equivalent to Hajj

For Ummat-e-Muslima, Umrah in Ramadan is a dream come true and it holds great significance in Islam as our Prophet PBUH claimed that “Umrah in Ramadan is like accompanying me on Hajj” (or “equal to Hajj with me”). It is the most desired time of the year due to the spiritual environment of the Haramain, the blessed nights of worship and the multiplied reward. Unfortunately, this demand also brings in unauthorised agents and unlicensed operators. They offer good rates to earn your trust, then charge you unexpected and sudden rise in fees once you have paid or your plans are confirmed.

This guide will teach you what hidden costs are, what warnings to look out for, and how you can keep your money and your worship safe before you book a Umrah 2027 packages from UK.

Why Ramadan Umrah Packages are Expensive

Based on the moon sighting, the beginning of Ramadan 2027 is expected to be around 8 February 2027. The price of a package increases because of a real change in its fundamental value. Hotels close months before the start of Ramadan near Masjid al-Haram and Masjid an-Nabawi, with the final ten nights being the most expensive. The more people fly to Jeddah and Madinah, the higher the prices will be, and transportation, food with ground services will also be more expensive during peak season. A higher price is therefore to be expected.

  • Make sure to book Hotels around Masjid al-Haram and Masjid-e-Nabawi in advance to avoid any inconvenience.

  • The final 10 nights are the most expensive and rooms near the Haram may be several times more expensive.

  • Flights to Jeddah and Madinah are more in demand and fares climb as the date approaches.

  • During the peak season, all transport, food and ground services are more expensive.

  • These higher prices are expected and to be normal. The issue begins when the charges are concealed, or are being added later on.

“Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed as a guide for humanity with clear proofs of guidance and decisive authority.” — Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185)

The Most Common Hidden Costs

1. "Near Haram" Hotels That Are Not Near the Haram

Some agents don't mention the hotel or the distance. Pilgrims arrive to find accommodations 1.5 to 3 km in distance, which is tiring for the elderly pilgrim and for families travelling with children. After getting scammed over the accommodations pilgrims then pay out additional costs for daily taxi or shuttle services or upgrade to a better hotel. Always ask the agency what the exact name of the hotel is, what is the distance in metres and what is the route to the Haram, then verify it on a map.

2. Visa and Processing Fees Listed "Separately"

A cheap price on headline is mainly misleading when it does not include essential costs. Some agents will not include Umrah visa fees, service charges, insurance or vaccinations and medical requirements as part of the package and only show them as "mandatory extras" when you have agreed to pay them. These add-ons can rapidly increase your overall package cost by quite a bit. Always ask if the fee includes the visa, processing, insurance and government fees before paying anything. Request for a written price quote, as there is no room for any hidden extras.

3. Transport May Not be Added in your Package

One of the most hidden terms in the marketing of Umrah is “Transport included.” In most situations, only airport pickup and drop-off is included. The transfer between the Holy cities, Madinah and Makkah, Ziyarat trips, daily transfer from hotels to mosques could be charged separately. These are costs that can rise up quickly during Ramadan when roads and taxis are crowded. Request a list of all the routes that will be traveled, the type of vehicle, and if it is a private or shared vehicle with other groups.

4. Meals May Also Not Be Included

The word “Meals” can have a wide variety of meanings. If you are planning to go for a trip during Ramadan, specifically ask the question if they include suhoor and iftar, and on which days. Ask if iftar is an acceptable meal or just dates and water. If the hotel serves meals, inquire about the schedule and the menu, particularly if you have children, elderly guests or dietary restrictions.

5. Shared Rooms Sold as Private Rooms

Some pilgrims pay for a double or quad room, expecting to have a private room for their family, and then discover that strangers are in the same room. Others are informed at check-in that they will be charged an "extra supplement" or an additional charge for the room type they had booked. Include in your contract the room type, the number of people and the bed arrangement in the room. Ask for the hotel confirmation voucher before you make your final payment.

6. Fake Flight Bookings

Some agents give a unconfirmed booking and then request additional funds to "confirm" the booking as the date approaches. Some even change the airline or route or the time without informing the client. During Ramadan, when fares are rapidly increasing, paying the difference at the last minute can be very expensive. Always request a confirmed ticket with a PNR (Passenger Name Record) and check the ticket on the airline's website or with the airline's office. Look at the dates, layovers, and baggage allowance as well.

7. Excess Baggage and Zamzam Fees

Many pilgrims return with Zamzam water, gifts, dates and prayer items, unaware of the airline's weight restrictions. Zamzam containers typically count in your bag allowance and excess baggage fees at the airport can be costly, particularly during peak seasons. When your agent doesn't tell you about the rules for bags, it may cause inconvenience. Please inquire before your travel date about the allowances for checked and cabin luggage, the Zamzam policy and the excess fee per kilogram, so you can pack wisely and budget accordingly.

8. Last-Minute Surcharges

Some agents offer an attractive base rate, collect a deposit and then add on surcharges later. These may refer to the final 10 nights of the Ramadan season. By then you have already paid, made leave arrangements, and told your family, so you feel pressured to accept. To prevent this, be sure to request a flat rate that covers all of your expenses. Make sure the contract includes that there will be no additional surcharges after booking.

9. Cancellation and Amendment Traps

Cheap Umrah packages may contain strict conditions that are included in the hard copy. Some packges are non-refundable and charge high penalties for date, name or hotel changes. If your passport expires, you've been delayed in visa processing. Please read the cancellation and refunds policy before payment. If the visa is denied, or the agent changes the itinerary or if flights are cancelled, ask what will happen. A reputable agency will discuss these terms in detail and in writing.

10. Charges for Services You Assumed Were Free

Some services are included in the package but charged separately. They include guide fees, Ziyarat tours, luggage handling and wheelchair assistance, which are particularly important for elderly pilgrims, families and those with health issues. These little charges can quickly add up on the journey. Ask for a complete list of inclusions and exclusions. If you or a family member require special assistance (e.g. wheelchair, special guide), make sure to check in writing what this would cost and how it is to be arranged.

How to Know about an Unauthorised Agency

Be careful if an agent:

  • Does not have a valid government licence or registration number.

  • Demands cash payment in full without any receipt.

  • Transfers money through a personal account, not a company account.

  • Provides a discount far below the market, particularly during Ramadan.

  • Will not provide the hotel, airline or dates of a flight in writing.

  • Suggest that they book now or the price will go up.

  • Does not have an office address, but only has a phone number or social media page.

  • Avoids giving a written contract or invoice.

  • Guarantees visa or seats without conditions.

How to Protect Yourself: A Deatailed Checklist

Before you book

  1. Check the agency's licence with the official body of your country. For instance, take advice from the CAA in the UK or Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

  2. Look for official Saudi news. Ask the agent how the visa and bookings are being processed on the Saudi Nusuk platform, as this is the official platform for Umrah permits and many services.

  3. If possible, go to the office and check out authentic pilgrim reviews that were recently posted.

Get your contract in writing

  • Request a written, detailed quote including: Distances from the Haram to hotel names in Makkah and Madinah (in metres)

  • Number of nights spent in each city.

  • The type of room and number of persons in room

  • Airline, flight date and ticket type (confirmed, not tentative)

  • Baggage allowance

  • Visa, insurance and service charges

  • What meals will be provided and what days.

  • Ground transport: all routes travelled

  • Ziyarat tours: included or extra

  • Cancellation and refund policy

  • Any surcharges that may be imposed at a later stage

When you pay

  • Make a deposit to the official company bank account, NOT a personal bank account.

  • If possible, pay in installments, and link subsequent payments with written receipts like visa and tickets.

  • Save all receipts, invoices and screenshots.

  • Avoid pre-payment of the total amount until a valid hotel voucher and booking for the flight is presented.

After booking

  • Check your hotel and flight directly with the hotel or airline.

  • Verify the visa status by official channels.

  • Keep copies of all documents (both on disk and on the web).

  • Maintain the agent's emergency contact and the contact of a local representative in Saudi Arabia.

Questions to Ask to Your Agent (Before Booking)

  1. “Is this the final price and there are no additional costs?”

  2. “How much is the distance between the hotel and the Haram?”

  3. Always confirm your PNR?

  4. What if my visa is not granted or delayed?

  5. If I cancel, what is your refund policy?

  6. “If there is a problem, who will accompany me to Makkah and Madinah?”

A reputable agency has clear and written answers to these. When answers are general, it's a warning.

Final Thoughts

Umrah is an act of worship and one that should be planned responsibly and sincerely. Not always the cheapest package is a fair one. It is the one that is  transparent, licensed, and clearly written down. Be patient, double check and reserve early, as Ramadan 2027 will be a busy time for good hotels. Please check the current visa requirements, dates and costs with official sources before travelling, as visa requirements and Ramadan dates may change.

Always confirm current visa, dates, and prices with official sources before travelling, as policies and Ramadan dates can change.
