Historical Significance of Eid ul Fitr?

Eid ul Fitr is also known as the "Festival of Breaking the Fast," and is one of the two primary festivals in Islam. Eid signifies "festival" or "recurring happiness" in Arabic and Fitr signifies "breaking the fast. The name refers to a day of celebration after one month of fasting each day.

The festival comes immediately after Ramadan 2027, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims fast from dawn to dusk during the month of Ramadan, pray more, read the Quran and give generously to those in need. That discipline is rewarded with Eid ul Fitr. It is a day to be grateful to Allah for the strength He provided to fulfil your sacred fast, seeking forgiveness and strengthening relations with families, friends and neighbors.

Eid ul Fitr is celebrated on 1st Shawwal, the first day of the tenth month of the Islamic calendar. Fasting is not allowed on this day as it is the definite end of Ramadan. It is determined according to the Hijri lunar calendar, which is based on the sighting of the new crescent moon. Therefore, the duration of Ramadan is 29 or 30 days and Eid is declared on the day after the crescent of Shawwal is sighted.

The day starts with the special prayer for Eid, greetings of Eid Mubarak, sharing of food and giving of charity so that all members of the community can share in the joy.

How Is the Date of Eid Decided?

The date of Eid ul Fitr is calculated by the Islamic lunar calendar (Hijri calendar). This calendar is lunar; each month starts at the sighting of the new moon and ends on the 29th or 30th of the month. Due to this, the end of Ramadan and the beginning of Shawwal are only after the crescent is sighted.

There are two ways of finding the date. The first is the traditional sighting of the moon, which is done by a group of trusted individuals or official committees seeking the crescent on the evening of the 29th of Ramadan. The second is astronomical calculation, which is based on scientific data to determine the time of the new moon. Some countries or organisations use one of these methods, others use both.

The dates vary from country to country due to the fact that the crescent may be seen in one country but not in the other and also due to the different methods used. That's why Eid can be celebrated on different days in different parts of the world.

How Eid ul Fitr Is Celebrated

Eid ul Fitr is observed through acts of worship, charity and spending time with family and friends. Here are the main traditions.

  • Eid Prayers (Salat ul Eid)

The day starts with a special prayer for the congregation, which is performed in the mosques or in open spaces, just after sunrise. This is followed by a sermon (khutbah) and a greeting of "Eid Mubarak.

  • Zakat ul Fitr

This is a compulsory Charity that is paid prior to the Eid Prayer. It is to make people in need able to enjoy the festival as well and to purify the fast of Ramadan.

  • Special Foods

Eid tables are laced with festive dishes. Along with sweets, vermicelli khurma (sweet vermicelli dessert with milk and dates) is a popular treat among Muslims.

  • New Clothes, Family Visits and Eidi

Families put on their nicest or new clothes, and go to visit friends and family members, and eat together. Elderly give Eidi which is money or small gifts to the children.

  2. Be a smart shopper and saver! List clothes, gifts and groceries; establish a budget. It is better to shop a few weeks prior to Eid so you won't have to deal with the rush and price hikes.

  3. Except charity and Zakat ul Fitr: Find out the amount of Zakat ul Fitr for Ramadan and pay for it before the Eid prayer, so that others can celebrate too. There is also an increase in giving additional charity these days.

  4. Plan family gatherings: Plan ahead for sheer khurma and sweets, and determine who will cook, serve, and host. Make sure to be flexible with your schedule because the exact day of Eid will be determined by moon sighting.
