Zamzam is an Arabic word that is specified for miraculous water that is located in Makkah. The water is coming from the ‘Well of Zamzam’ that is about 20m away from the Kaaba on its east side. According to Islamic history, the water source was created as a result of a miracle. Its history is backed thousands of years ago.
History of Zamzam Water
The history of Zamzam starts when Prophet Ibrahim (AS) left his wife Hajara (RA) and his son Ismail (AS) in the desert of Makkah. At that time the little son wasn’t able to walk on his feet and after a very short time, he started to cry due to extreme thirst. Hazrat Hajira (RA) started to run between the two high hills named as Safa and Marwa to find some water.
She made seven rounds between the hills but didn’t find even a drop. The ritual of Sa’I that pilgrims perform in Hajj and Umrah packages is a tribute to her efforts. When she was returning from her seven rounds towards her child Ismail (AS) he saw water flowing from the ground. It is said that when the little child stroke his feet on the ground due to thirst Allah Almighty started the flow of water from that point.
Hajira (RA) said ‘Zome Zome’ to the water which means ‘stop’. After that incidence, the water was named as ‘Zamzam’. Hajira (RA) made a boundary with some stones to limit the flow of water. Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son Ismail (AS) also built the Kaaba on the instruction of God.
Zamzam Hadiths
Once the Holy Prophet (PBUH) said, “The water of Zamzam is for whatever purpose it is drunk for.” (Ibn Maajah, 2/1018). In another hadith, Zamzam is also described as the best water on earth as Prophet (PBUH) said, “The best water on the face of the earth is Zamzam water. In it is food for nourishment and healing for illness.” (Al-Mujam Al-Kabir 11011)
In another hadith of Sahih Muslim Anas ibn Malik (RA) reported that: Gabriel came to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH)when he was a child playing with his friends. Gabriel took hold of him and laid him on the ground, and then he tore open his chest, took out his heart, and extracted a blood clot from it. Gabriel said, “This was the measure of Satan inside you.”
Gabriel washed his heart with Zamzam water in a golden vessel and it was joined together and restored. The boys came running to his mother and said, “Muhammad has been killed!” They rushed to Muhammad and found that he was alive and his colour had changed. Anas said, “I myself saw the marks of the needle on his chest.” (Sahih Muslim 162)
How to Drink Zamzam Water
The confusion of the drinking method of Zamzam water is cleared from the action of our Holy Prophet (PBUH) that is clearly described in a hadith. Ibn Abbas reported that: “I gave the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a drink of water from the Zamzam well and he drank it while standing up.” (Sunan al-Nasai 2965)
Zamzam Dua
It is recommended that when you are about to drink the Zamzam water you should recite the following sunnah prayer. Zamzam Dua is as follows:
“O Allah, I seek beneficial knowledge, wide sustenance and cure from all ailments from You.”
اللَّهُمَّ نِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمَ فِعَاًً وَرِزْقَاً سِعَاًَ وَشِفَاءً مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ
