Importance of Day of Arafah in Islam

The day of Arafah in Islam is known as the most important event to ask for forgiveness, mercy, well-ness, and spiritual revival. This sacred day is experienced annually on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, when countless Muslims gather on the vast plain of Arafah to perform their sacred Hajj rituals with humble supplications, reciting quranic verses, praying, and offering sunnah acts taught by the Holy Prophet PBUH. This immersive worship blesses muslims and helps them draw a closer connection with the Almighty SWT through fasting, deep dhikr, and sincere apologies over the past sins.

It is mentioned by the Holy Prophet PBUH that fasting on 9th of Dhul Hijjah expiates the sins of the previous years and the year to come.

But do you want to learn what makes this day so significant in Islamic tradition and how can you maximize the blessings? Then you are at the right place, this blog will let you explore the rich history and importance of the sacred day of Arafah by unveiling virtues, tips, and the purpose of this day.

Ummul Mu’minin Aisha (RA) narrated from Allah’s Messenger PBUH: “There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Hellfire than the Day of ‘Arafah.” [Sahih Muslim]

Powerful reasons to fast on the day of Arafah

“Religion of Islam was Perfected”

The day of Arafah is known as the day when Islam was perfected or completed.

Allah (SWT) revealed to the Prophet Muhammad PBUH: ”Today, I have perfected for you your religion, completed upon you My blessing and have approved for you Islam as your religion.” (Qur’an 5:3)

During Hajj, pilgrims stand shoulder to shoulder on the plain of Arafah, and Muslims are called all over the world to join in the Hajj's limitless blessings by fasting, dhikr and sincere apologies.

On this day we fast to pay tribute to this divine fulfillment of Islam and to recommit ourselves to living according to the Qur'ān and the Sunnah. This is an Islamic way for families to help children learn about the finality and perfection of Islam, through the stories and the sharing of rituals of worship performed during this day.

The Farewell Sermon

On the Mount of Mercy (Jabal ar-Rahmah), the Prophet PBUH gave a great speech in which he spoke about human dignity, gender equality, racial equality, and human rights. By fasting on Arafah, we can follow these universal values. Think about one point from the sermon for each hour of the fast; talk about how it applies to the family or community.

Dua: Supplication

"There is nothing dearer to Allah than a servant making dua to Him." Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Here are a few important Duas to ask for during the sacred day of Arafah.

The greatest day of forgiveness, Freedom from the fire

The Holy prophet PBUH claimed that there is no day on which the Merciful and most beneficial “Almighty” SWT releases more people from the fire than the day of Arafah. (Sahih Muslim)

This is the most merciful day during the entire Hajj performance, when Muslims are forgiven for their past sins and offering fast makes it even more beneficial if performed with good intentions. Fasting during the day of Arafah softens the heart and increases our prayers. Make sure to ask for forgiveness for yourself and your loved ones.

The Prophet (PBUH) said: "Hajj is Arafah" (Sunan an-Nasa'i).

Not all of us can physically be on the plain of Arafah, but we can spiritually be on Arafah by fasting and asking for sincere forgiveness from the creator of all (SWT). It is a means of joining in the spirit of Hajj (repentance, unity and surrender to Allah).

Allah's Descent from the Sky to Forgive

In an amazing hadith, the Prophet PBUH explain how Allah would descend to the lowest heaven on the day of Arafah and say to the angels: “

“Come unto Me are My slaves, disheveled, from every faraway pass, longing for My mercy. Then [He says to the Pilgrims] be your sins like unto the grains of sand, the drops of rain, the foam on the sea, yet I forgive them! So go forth, My slaves, with all forgiveness, and for whatever and whomever you have pleaded” (graded Ḥasan by Al-Albânî).

This is a time of extraordinary closeness to our Creator. Fasting allows us to become free from the distractions of the world, and to give full attention to worship. Make Duas after Asr or before Maghrib, as Duas are more accepted during these times.

"And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security." (Qur'an 2:125)

The Importance of Arafah

The name Arafah comes from the Arabic root word *'arafa' means 'to know, recognise, or become aware'. As scholars have mentioned, the essence of this day is spiritually, a moment of self-awareness, of turning back to Allah with repentance, of reaching out to Him with a sincere heart and a thirst for His boundless mercy. It is a day for the heart of the Muslim to be awakened to the need for Divine guidance and for the soul to approach its Creator SWT.

Other Names of Arafah

It is known by various names each of which highlights a feature of its goodness: its most common name is Yawm al-Arafah (يوم عرفة); Yawm al-Wuqoof (يوم الوقوف), meaning the day of standing, because on this day the pilgrims stand in devotion on the plain of Arafah during Hajj; and The Day of Forgiveness, because this is the day when Allah grants forgiveness to those who sincerely seek it. These names are more than just titles, they are invitations to reflection: to stand in modesty, to know oneself, and to embrace forgiveness. While you are preparing yourself to perform fasting, dhikr, or sincere supplication on this blessed day. These  names remind you of the sacred purpose of Arafah: a blessing from Allah for spiritual renewal, sincere repentance, and an unmatchable closeness to Allah.
