Step-by-Step Guide About Rituals of Hajj – You Must Know
If you are the next one who is ready for pilgrimage, then these detailed steps will help you a lot. To perform the rites of Hajj, you must read these steps.
1 – Niyyah
Every pilgrim must be clear about their intention (Niyyah), whether for Umrah or Hajj before they start their journey.
Once you start your journey then recite this travel dua.
Subhana-alladhi sakh-khara la-na hadha wa ma kunna la-hu muqrinin. Wa inna ila Rabbi-na la munqalibun.
“Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return.”
2- Ihram: The Sacred State
Entering Ihram is the next step after Niyyah, and it is done on the 8th of Dhu al-Hijja before the pilgrim crosses the boundaries of Mecca. This is also known as the Miqat. It consists of wearing plain garments. Men have to wear 2 unstitched white clothes. One piece is used to cover the upper body, and the second is tied around the waist. This dress diminishes the difference of wealth and status and shows equality among all individuals. On the other hand, there are no specific conditions for women, but they have to wear loose clothes.
You should keep an eye on the points discussed next, before entering into the state of Ihram.
- Hunting is not allowed in Ihram.
- You must avoid sins.
- Women may trim a small part of their hair.
- After Ihram, men are not allowed to trim their hair.
- Sexual relations are not allowed during the duration of Ihram.
Depending on the type of Hajj you have chosen, you should recite the following duas.
Hajj al-Tamatt’u – Labbayk Allahumma bi ‘Umrah
Hajj al-Qiran – Labbayk Allahumma bi Hajjah wa ‘Umrah
Hajj al-Ifrad – Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan
After that recite this:
“Allaahumma hadhihi hijjah la riya-a fiha wa la sum’ah”.
“O Allah, this is a pilgrimage in which there is no showing off or seeking reputation.”
3 – Talbiya
Recite Talbiya frequently, in the state of Ihram.
“Labbayk Allaahumma labbayk, labbayk laa shareeka laka labbayk, ‘innal-hamda, wanni’mata, laka walmulk, laa shareeka laka”
“Here I am O Allah, here I am. Here I am. You have no partners (other gods). To You alone is all praise and all excellence, and to You is all sovereignty. There is no partner for You.” [Sahih Muslim]
Males can say the Talbiya loudly while females should recite it softly.
4 – Tawaf
When you reach Kaabah, you must be in ablution. This rite involves revolving around the Khana Kaba 7 times. It’s a Suunah to touch and kiss the sacred Black Stone during the Tawaf. After that, offer prayers at Maqam E Ibrahim and drink Zamzam.
Note: Women having menstruation should not perform Tawaf.
5 – Sa’i
It consists of moving between the hills of Safa and Marwa 7 times. This is a beautiful ritual that reached us after the sacrifice of Hazrat Hajra (AS). At the end of this ritual, the Umrah, the first part of the Tamattu pilgrimage, is finished. After that, you can wear normal attire and shave your head.
Note: If you are among those who are performing the remaining 2 kinds of Hajj, such as Hajj al-Qiran, you must be in the state of Ihram until the Hajj ends. On the other side, an individual performing Hajj al-Ifrad, your journey towards pilgrimage rites begins now.
6 – Mina
On the 1st day of the pilgrimage, after the Fajr prayer in Mecca, start your travel towards Mina. Make sure to be in a state of Ihmran before moving towards Mina. During this journey, Muslim Ummahs should recite Talbiya, and offer all the prayers. They will stay the full night here. The second day of the pilgrimage is called Arafah Day.
7 – At Arafah
After sunrise, pilgrims move towards Arafah. During this sacred travel from Mina to Arafah, every pilgrim should recite Talbiya and Takbeer (Allahu Akbar).
The Imam will deliver the Khutbah in Masjid-E-Namirah. Then, they stay at the sacred place of Arafah and make special dua such as forgiveness and more. After sunset, start traveling towards Muzdalifah.
On this special day, Allah SWT showers blessings like forgiving sins and frees people from Hellfire. Our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) delivered his last sermon on this special day of Arafah. If you are not performing pilgrimage, you can fast as it is Sunnah.
Ummul Mu’minin Aisha (RA) narrated a hadith from Allah’s Messenger PBUH:
“There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Hellfire than the Day of ‘Arafah.” [Sahih Muslim]
Note: Whether you are performing a pilgrimage or not, you can do this good act. Say Takbeer after every prayer. It commences on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijja (Fajr prayer) and ends on the 13th of Dhu al-Hijja (Asar prayer).
Takbeer is:
“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah. Wallahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa lillahil hamd.”
8 – Journey towards Muzdalifah
When you start your journey towards Muzdalifah, recite Talbiya and Takbeer as much as you can. Upon reaching, offer Maghrib and Isha prayer together at Isha’s prayer time, as it is a Sunnah practice. You should stay here until the next sunrise.
Before you leave the Muzdalifah, collect stones. Recite the following dua during your stay:
أَكْبَرُ
لاَإِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ
أَللّهُ أَحَدٌ
9 – Throwing Stoning
After the Fajr prayer, move from Muzdalifah for Mina and recite Talbiya. At Mina, pilgrims will perform Ramy by throwing 7 stones and reciting Allahu Akbar. Talbiya is not recited during the act of throwing stones. Moreover, stones are thrown on the 11th and 12th of Dhul-Hijjah.
10 – Udhiya (Sacrifice)
Now, it’s the time to sacrifice animals. During the sacrifice, recite this dua.
“Bismillaahi wallaahu ‘Akbar [Allaahumma minka wa laka] Allaahumma taqabbal minnee.”
Note: Sacrificing the animal is not required if anyone is performing Hajj al-Ifrad.
11 – Halq and Taqsir
Once you have done with the Udhiya, then completely shave your head or shorten the hair. Now you can temporarily wear the usual clothes.
12 – Go for Sa’i and Perform Tawaf
Proceed to Masjid al-Haram to perform Tawaf al-Ifrad just like before. After that, perform 2 Raka’h at Makam E Ibrahim. Offer the Dhuhr Salah in Kaaba. Then, perform Sa’i to Safa and Marwa and drink Zamzam. Return to Mina and stay the whole night there.
13 – Tawaf al-Wida
On the 13th of Dhul Hijjah, you can throw pebbles at Shaitan. Afterward, you may leave Makkah and offer Tawaf al-Wida in Khana Kaba.
