Let’s tie up your seatbelts and start exploring the list of du’aas in this guide. A brief detail on these is given here.
Start Your Journey with Prayers: The Power of Starting with Dua
When you start your journey towards Makkah then you should start reciting dua for safe journey, seeking the blessings of Allah, with heartfelt sincerity. Dua throughout the voyage makes your journey safe. Reading dua for travelling on plane is a good practice. Dua for safe travel is given below:
“Glory unto Him Who created this transportation, for us, though we were unable to create it on our own. And unto our Lord we shall return.” Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14
Entering a Sacred State – Ihraam
Niyyan is an important part of Islam when you want to perform any deed. Therefore, you should make Niyyah with a pure heart before offering the Umrah. It is mandatory for Muslims when they come for Umrah, they prepare themself according to the Shariah.
Once reaching Meeqaat, you should perform ghusl if there is a possibility, otherwise, you can do wudhoo. After that, you should wear Ihraam. It is white in color – has two sheets. It distinguishes pilgrims from others and shows that all are equal. The women are advised to cover all their bodies. Moreover, men can apply itr.
Offer 2 raka’at nafl with the purpose of Ihraam. Recite ‘Qul yaa ayyuhal kaafiroon’ in the first raka’at and ‘Qul huwallaahu ahad’ in the second raka’at. Once, you have done with this, sit
on the prayer mat, and make the niyyah of Umrah saying these words:
اللهم اني أُرِيدُ العُمْرَةَ فَيَسِرُهَا لِي وَتَقَبَّلُهَا مِن
“O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah. Make it easy for me and accept it from me”
After that, read the following du’aa 3 times. It is also known as Talbiyah:
لبيك اللهم لبيك – لَبَّيْكَ لا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لا شَرِيكَ لكَ
“Here I am at Your Service, O Lord, here I am. Here I am, no partner do You have, here I am. Truly, the Praise and the Favour is Yours, and the Sovereignty. No partner do You have”
Men recite these words loudly and females have to recite them silently. Now, read Durood Shareef. Recite Talbiyah as much as you can. You can read it in any condition whether you are standing, sitting, traveling, laying down, or walking.
Performance of Umrah – At Makkah Mukarramah
After wearing Ihraam, say istighfaar and recite the Talbiyah as much as you recite until you arrive at Makkah. Enter the holy city of Makkah with an open heart and respect. Just forget all the worries and purify yourself. After that go to Al Masjidul Haraam put your right foot first and start saying:
بسمِ اللهِ وَالصَّلَوةُ وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ اللهم انتم لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ
“In the name of Allah. May the Peace and Salutations (of Allah) be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open for me the doors of Your Mercies”
When you see Ka’bah then say these words 3 times:
الله اكبر لا إله إلا الله
“Allah is the greatest. There is no deity except Allah”
After that, recite Durood and make supplications while standing, facing towards the Ka’bah. Another important thing to keep in mind is that, at this time whatever dua you make is surely answered by Allah. Everyone must make this du’aa:
“O Allah, when you take me away from this world, take me in the state of Imaan. O Allah, enter me into Jannah without any account. O Allah, accept all my du’aa and keep me steadfast on Deen”
With each supplication, seek Allah’s blessings at this holy place.
“At Al Kaaba, dua becomes a spiritual connection between the pilgrim and Allah”
Mas’alah: A woman in the state of Haydh or Nifaas can not enter into the Masjid.
Embracing Divine Blessings During Tawaaf
Now ready to perform Tawaaf. It is fardh in Umrah. During Tawaaf make lots of du’aas and remember Allah. You can also recite the holy Qur’aan. Keep in mind that your voice should be low so that others easily perform Tawaaf. Take a step towards the corner of the Ka’bah where Al Hajarul Aswad lies.
When you arrive at Al Hajarul Aswad, make Idhtibaa and face towards the Ka’bah. In such a way, the whole of Al Hajarul Aswad is positioned to the right of your right shoulder. Now, stop reciting Talbiyah and make niyyah to perform Tawaaf.
Now, move just a bit to your right side, keeping your face and chest towards the Ka’bah. You have to stand on the black line, it shows that you are precisely aligned with Al Hajarul Aswad. Lift your hands up to the ears, and then say:
بسمِ اللهِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ وَلِلَّهِ الْحَمدُ
“In the Name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest, and all Praise is for Allah”
Now, place your both palms on the Al Hajarul Aswad, and after that kiss it gently. If you do not get the chance to kiss it, then you can touch it with both hands or one hand or uplift your hands facing Al Hajarul Aswad and say:
بسمِ اللهِ الله اكبر
“In the Name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest”
It is known as Istilaam. This action should be conducted at the end of each round while standing on the black/brown line and facing Al Hajarul Aswad. Proceed towards the right side, make sure that the Ka’bah remains on your left side, and walk around Ka’bah until you reach back to Al Hajarul Aswad. Here, perform Istilaam. At this stage, you have completed one round. You have to complete 7 rounds to complete the Tawaaf.
Once you are done with 7 rounds, do Istilaam, go to Maqaami Ibraaheem, and offer two raka’at waajib. It is Sunnah to recite ‘Qul yaa ayyuhal kaafiroon’ in the first raka’at and ‘Qul huwallaahu ahad’ in the second raka’at. If you are unable to find a place at Maqaami Ibraaheem. You can find another place within the Masjid and offer two raka’at.
After that, take steps towards the well of Zamzam and drink Zamzam water facing the direction of Ka’bah. After returning from the well of Zamzam, proceed to Multazam and embrace the wall of the Ka’bah. At that time, making supplications, it is certainly accepted by Allah. You can go to Multazam before going to the well of Zamzam if you want.
Once again, come back to Al Hajarul Aswad and perform Istilaam. Before Sa’ee this Istilaam is mustahab.
Masʼalah: There are no specific supplications prescribed for Tawaaf. You should pray for the fulfillment of both, world and hereafter needs.
Masʼalah: Hateem is part of Ka’bah. Hence, going around the Hateem is necessary to complete the Tawaaf.
Mas’alah: Performing the initial 3 rounds with Ramal is a Sunnah for men.
Masʼalah: Idhtibaa is only for men. It is Sunnah during Tawaaf only.
Masʼalah: During Tawaaf, once you come to Al Ruknul Yamaani, merely you can touch it with both hands or the right hand. It’s not a Sunnah practice to kiss or raise hands at this corner.
Mas’alah: Between Al Ruknul Yamaani and Al Hajarul Aswad it is Sunnah to recite:
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
“O Allah, grant us goodness in this world, and goodness in the hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the fire”
Mas’alah: The Ka’bah should be on the left side all the time during the Tawaaf. Make sure your back, chest, or right arm are not facing the Ka’bah.
Ibne ‘Umar radhiyallahu anhu relates that he heard Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wasallam say, “The touching (of Al Hajarul Aswad) removes sins and whoever performs the Tawaaf properly (according to rule) the reward (is like) that of the freeing of a slave and one does not place one’s foot on the ground nor raises it (in Tawaaf) except that Allah removes a sin (from his deeds) and orders for him one good deed.” Tirmizi
Sa’ee – The Sacred Path Between Safa and Marwa
After the Istilaam, take a step towards the Safaa. It entails walking between Safa and Marwa 7 times. It reminds us to remember the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
Climb Safaa until you reach the location from where Ka’bah is visible between the pillars of Al Masjidul Haraam and make an intention for Sa’ee. Keep your face towards Ka’bah, and raise your both hands up to make supplication. Then say three times:
الله اكبر لا إله إلا الله
“Allah is the Greatest, there is no deity except Allah”
Read Durood Shareef and make du’aa. This is the place where du’aas are answered. While walking between Safaa and Marwah, always engage in the remembrance of Allah and supplicate.
Upon reaching the green lights, increase your pace and run gently until you reach the next set. Then resume walking to Marwah. Women walk at a regular pace between green lights. On Marwah, you go to a location from where there is a visibility of Ka’bah. You should perform the same actions as on Safaa. It constitutes one round.
NOTE: As the Ka’bah can not be seen from the Marwah, however, ascend the Marwah and determine the direction of the Ka’bah.
From Marwah moves to Safaa in the same way as discussed above. When you reach Safaa, you have completed the second round. In this way, complete seven rounds. The last round will conclude at Marwah.
Now, at this point, it is mustahab to offer 2 raka’at in Al Masjidul Haraam. It is Sunnah to recite:
رَبِّ اغْفِرُ وَارحَمُ أَنْتَ الْأَعْةُ الأَكْرَمُ
“O my Lord, forgive and have mercy. You are the most Majestic, the most Generous”
Halaq – The Sacred Ritual
After the completion of Sa’ee, you are obligated to shave your head or trim the hair of the whole head, trim at least 1 inch of each hair. It is more virtuous to shave your head. Women are required to cut off over 1 inch from the end of their plait. Once you have done shaving or trimming the hair, the Umrah rituals are ended, and all applied restrictions because of Ihraam will be eliminated.
May Allah Pak accept your Umrah and grant you with its countless blessings.
